Μόλις έξη χρόνια από την είσοδο του 21ου αιώνα και ο άνθρωπος στρέφεται στο Διάστημα με περισσότερη παρά ποτέ αποφασιστικότητα. Αξιοποιώντας την καλπάζουσα τεχνολογική εξέλιξη όχι μόνον παρατηρεί βαθύτερα στο παρελθόν του Σύμπαντος αλλά και προετοιμάζεται πυρετωδώς για την θρυλική απόβαση στην Σελήνη και δεκαετίες αργότερα στον πλανήτη Άρη.

New tools aid volcanic ash monitoring

While satellites are providing an ideal way of monitoring the cloud of volcanic ash sweeping across much of Europe recently, a ground-based network of lidar instruments has also been providing a valuable source of information to help meteorologists assess this unprecedented event. The Earlinet network of lidar stations has been closely monitoring the cloud of volcanic ash from the Eyjafjallajoekull volcano in Iceland since it started erupting on 15 April. The network, which comprises 26 different stations across Europe, uses lidar, short for ‘light detection and ranging’, instruments that shoot powerful bursts of light from a laser into the sky to acquire information on the physical properties of the atmosphere.

Η αναφορά του όρου διαστημικός καιρός πιθανόν να σας παραξενέψει. Ίσως μάλιστα και να μην έχετε ακούσει ποτέ κάτι σχετικό. Άλλωστε οι περισσότεροι κάτοικοι της γης μόνον με τον γήινο καιρό, την πρόγνωση και τις επιπτώσεις του ασχολούνται. Ωστόσο πολλά συνηγορούν υπέρ της ανάγκης να ενημερωθούμε για τα περί διαστημικού καιρού. Ο Δρ. Γιάννης Δαγκλής διευθυντής του ινστιτούτου διαστημικής του Εθνικού Αστεροσκοπείου Αθηνών είναι σαφής για το θέμα αυτό. Πολλά φαινόμενα συμβαίνουν στη πλανητική μας γειτονιά, μας αφορούν και μας επηρεάζουν. Κάποιες φορές δε με οδυνηρό και ιδιαίτερα κοστοβόρο τρόπο.

It’s 20 years since the shuttle blasted off from the Kennedy Space Center to place the famous observatory in orbit.  The telescope’s achievements are immense. Few instruments in the history of science have had quite the same «wow factor»; and anyone who looks at its iconic pictures cannot fail to question – just a little bit – their place and significance in the grand scheme of things.

As we’ve come to expect on such occasions, Nasa has released a suitably stunning image to celebrate the birthday.The version rendered on this page uses data acquired by Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3, which was installed on the last shuttle servicing mission and promises a raft of further discoveries as the telescope moves into its twilight years.

Europe’s Cryosat-2 ‘ice explorer’ ready for lift-off

Europe’s Cryosat-2 spacecraft will be sent into orbit on Thursday to monitor ice cover at the Earth’s poles. It will launch atop a converted intercontinental ballistic missile from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Cryosat-2 is a copy of the spacecraft destroyed in 2005 when its rocket failed five minutes after lift-off. Member states of the European Space Agency (Esa) thought the mission was so important they agreed to re-build and re-fly the satellite.

The launch is timed for 1357 GMT (1457 BST; 1557 CEST). «One will be nervous,» said Richard Francis, the Esa Cryosat project manager. «But it will be so exhilarating when the spacecraft finally makes it into orbit and we get the first contact with it, the thing we didn’t get the last time.»

Eugene Cernan: «I am absolutely committed to the fact that we will go back at sometime»

Former Nasa astronauts who went to the Moon have told the BBC of their dismay at President Barack Obama’s decision to push back further Moon missions.

Jim Lovell, commander of the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission, said Mr Obama’s decision would have «catastrophic consequences» for US space exploration.

The last man on the Moon, Eugene Cernan, said it was «disappointing».

Last month Mr Obama cancelled Nasa’s Constellation Moon landings programme, approved by ex-President George W Bush.

Nasa still aims to send astronauts back to the Moon, but it is likely to take decades and some believe that it will never happen again.

‘Moral leadership’

The astronauts spoke to the BBC at a private event at the Royal Society in London on Friday organised by the Foundation for Science and Technology.

They were joined there by the first man on the Moon, Neil Armstrong.

As the last astronaut to return to the Apollo 17 lunar module in 1972, Cernan was the last man to set foot on the Moon.

«I’m quite disappointed that I’m still the last man on the Moon,» he said. «I thought we’d have gone back long before now.»

So why does he believe Americans should go back to the Moon?

«I think America has a responsibility to maintain its leadership in technology and its moral leadership… to seek knowledge. Curiosity’s the essence of human existence.»

It is a view shared by fellow Apollo Astronaut Jim Lovell, the heroic commander of Apollo 13.

«Personally I think it will have catastrophic consequences in our ability to explore space and the spin-offs we get from space technology,» he said.

«They haven’t thought through the consequences.»

Lunar dream alive

Although Cernan and Lovell expressed their dismay with President Obama’s decision, Mr Armstrong tactfully avoided the subject.

When he set foot on the Moon in July 1969, it seemed as if humanity would soon colonise other worlds.

By 1994, when I interviewed him for the first time, he said: «The reality may have faded. But the dream is still there and it will come back in time.»

But with the cancellation of Nasa’s Constellation programme to return Americans to the moon by 2020, who is to inspire the next generation?

Nasa still aims to send astronauts back to the Moon, using Nasa to provide incentives and oversight to the private sector for launch services.

It is likely to take some time, however.

Until then we will have the epic tales of Armstrong, Lovell, Cernan and the rest of the Apollo astronaut corps to remind us that all things are possible – and despite the current pause in human spaceflight to other worlds, the dream is still there.

Mε ρυθμικά επαναλαμβανόμενα ηχητικά μπιπ-μπιπ για τους αρχικά ανυποψίαστους ακροατές των ραδιοσημάτων άρχισε η εποποιία του διαστήματος 50 χρόνια πριν και με τον ρωσικό δορυφόρο Sputnik 1 να περνάει πάνω από τα κεφάλια ακόμη και των εντυπωσιασμένων Αμερικανών πολιτών. Ασφαλώς καμιά τεχνολογική σχέση δεν έχει ο «αρχαίος» δορυφόρος του 1957 με τα σημερινά υπερσύγχρονα διαστημικά σκάφη που βλέπουν, «ακούν» και αναμεταδίδουν σχεδόν οτιδήποτε. Από μια απλή τηλεφωνική συνομιλία, ραδιοτηλεοπτικά προγράμματα, συνδέσεις ίντερνετ, επιτρέπουν αυτόματη πλοήγηση σχεδόν οπουδήποτε και διανέμουν φωτογραφίες προεπιλεγμένων περιοχών της γης με απίστευτες λεπτομέρειες. Όμως ο Sputnik 1 ήταν ο πρωτοπόρος, η μεγάλη αρχή, το ξεκίνημα για το πρώτο «βάδισμα» στο διάστημα, τους διαστημικούς σταθμούς και ίσως αργότερα τις αποικίες στη Σελήνη και τον Άρη.

Απρόσμενο τέλος είχε η αγωνία στο διαστημικό κέντρο του ακρωτηρίου Κανάβεραλ της Φλώριδα με την απόφαση που πήρε η NASA να αναβάλει την προγραμματισμένη για χθες στις 22:51 εκτόξευση του Discovery. Όπως ανακοίνωσε αίτια ήταν η ελαττωματική λειτουργία ενός από τους τέσσερις αισθητήρες τροφοδοσίας καυσίμων στους κινητήρες του κατά την φάση της ανόδου. Σε περίπτωση δυσλειτουργίας το σκάφος δεν θα είχε την απαραίτητη ώθηση.
